Whether you are dealing with a major illness, or you are working hard towards your health-related goals, taking time to let your body recover is crucial. Just like with High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), we must work hard, but we must also take time to actively rest.

Listening to your body and knowing when to let it detoxify and rest will be paramount to your long-term success. Once you have created a beautiful state of healthy happiness, you must cherish it and maintain it. I integrate active rest practices into every program that I design for my clients — the benefits go far beyond our bellies, but they appreciate it too!

Fear & Anxiety Management

Just as we detoxify our bodies, we must also cleanse our minds. The pace of the modern world has pushed our normal state into one of fear and anxiety. Our bodies are constantly in a fight or flight response which causes massive strain on our entire body.

Learn to find peace and pause throughout your day, observing your bodily reactions to fear. With mindful awareness, you can discover self-compassion and encourage the feeling of being in control, instead of being controlled by your environment. I focus living in the now with my clients, living a conscious life that loves the present moment and does not linger in the past.

Iyengar Yoga

What is Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar Yoga is a form of Hatha Yoga that focuses on precision achieved through long periods of holding poses, enhanced by yoga props and breath control (pranayama).

My Practice

Iyengar yoga is an essential pillar to my mind-body connection and a daily practice that I hold dear to my heart. I am a certified Iyengar teacher at the Intermediate level and cherish time spent sharing the art of Iyengar with others.

HIIT

What is High Intensity Interval Training?

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a form of exercise that alternates between brief bouts of strenuous exercise and active rest. HIIT places your muscles in a state of extreme stress and then allows them to quickly recover during active rest. By combining intense physical movement with active rest, one is able to keep both their heart and breath rates up, providing all the benefits of prolonged aerobic exercise in a short amount of time. HIIT is a happy marriage of the two schools of fitness thought and it may bring greater results than resistance training or aerobic exercises on their own.

Sleep

In our modern world that is full distractions and deadlines, we have never neglected sleep more. In order for our bodies to thrive, we must make sleep and relaxation a priority. When we give up a few hours of sleep to watch TV or spend some extra time in the office, we are robbing our bodies of the chance to cleanse, detoxify, repair and rejuvenate.

If you want to improve the quality of your life, start with the quality of your sleep. If you do not receive adequate rest, you will not only be fatigued, but you will also be compromising your productivity, memory, and mental state.

How much sleep do we need?

In order to operate at peak efficiency, an active adult should get at least 7.5 hours of rest each night. This amount of rest allows your mind to cycle through multiple REM states which are required for nourishing your nervous system and harnesses energy that will push you through the next day with vitality and awareness.

How can I achieve better sleep quality?

  • Avoid alcohol, tobacco, sugar and don’t eat at least 2 hours prior bedtime.
  • Healthy diet and regular brisk exercise
  • A hot bath with either epsom salts or essential oils prior to bedtime.
  • Don’t exercise directly before going too bed, as exercise is stimulating.
  • Make your bedroom quiet, dark, and cool.
  • Practice relaxation techniques like guided meditation, breath work, or restorative yoga.
  • Supplements or herbs: chamomile tea, kava kava, valerian root, melatonin, magnesium, various Chinese herbs or Bach Flower remedies.
  • Go to bed at the same time each night (iPhones have a great built-in app for that).

Bio-Hacking

What is Bio-Hacking?

Biohacking is the practice of managing your own biology using medical, nutritional, physical, or electronic techniques. I have personally used bio-hacking to supercharge my body and mind, staying in a peak state for greater amounts of time.

What are some “easy” bio-hacks I can start with?

  • Reconnecting With Nature (decreased stress/inflammation and improved concentration)
  • Guided Meditation (Increased self-awareness, decrease anxiety and depression)
  • Gratitude (improved sleep quality, a greater focus on happiness opposed to pleasure)
  • Stand up often instead of sitting (improved circulation, increased energy levels, decreased inflammation)

Emotional States

Managing your emotional state, AKA getting your head on straight, can be the difference between long lasting success and disappointing defeats. Planting the seeds that will cultivate a strong, positive attitude is key! I constantly preach gratitude with my clients. Gratitude places a focus on what we have instead of what we lack. Even when things in your life are not going as planned, if you manage your emotional state, you can stay upbeat and forge ahead until you regain your footing.

Pursue Happiness Not Pleasure

My life was completely transformed when I stopped fueling my dopamine addiction (pleasure) and instead found sustained peace pursuing a life full of happiness (serotonin).

There is a pleasure epidemic sweeping across the globe at the moment. Many would rather scroll through their social media feeds to check how many “likes” they have received instead of spending time with their family. Our lives should be built on a foundation of REAL connection with others, supplemented by contribution. When you start living a life of happiness, it is a kin to waking up from a long hazy dream, where your former reality was TV and the internet. I help my clients radically shift their lives and their focuses, which leads to amazing results in the body and the mind.

Food Detox

Would you like to feel and look 5-10 years younger? What would your life be like if you had access to seemingly limitless energy?

One of the most effective ways to detox your system is through whole, organic, and natural foods. By simplifying your diet and detoxing with these “real foods” you will be completely transformed, tapping into an energy source that will flood your mind and body with a true sense of vitality.

How does a food detox work?

One of the first things I do with all my students is analyze their sources of fuel and create a plan to fast track their detoxing success. By creating customized programs that replace refined sugars and carbohydrates with super foods and healthy fats, their body can begin to heal, while also providing them with massive amounts of energy.

A food detox does not have to be overly complicated. When I devise diets or programs I break down every detail, leaving nothing to chance. It is very important to examine the role of vitamins and minerals in a food detox and carefully select what foods you eat and when you consume those foods.

Preparation is Key

One of the biggest factors of success in any area of life is a person’s ability to properly plan and allocate their resources before attacking their goal. This is especially true when it comes to your diet. Why do people indulge in fast food even know they know it is poisoning their body? Because it is convenient. They do not have healthy food easily accessible to them so they take the easy way out.

If you can spare even a small amount of time to decide what you will be consuming during a single week, you will be able to purchase the “right” ingredients at the grocery store, and that will lead to the body and energy levels you deserve. When you plan and prepare meals beforehand that help your body instead of hindering it, staying on track and progressing becomes simple.

Nutrition

When it comes to nutritional values, there are massive amounts of false and misguiding information filling our news feeds, which can make it difficult to know what you really should be consuming. One of the most powerful things I can do for my students is act as a nutritional guide and highlight the foods that are best for your overall health and health goals.

By analyzing what the human body needs, how it processes that required fuel and when that fuel is required, I have discovered the core building blocks of nutrition that lead to vitality and success.
